1 September, Day 3

Everyone wakes up quite early today to ensure they are awake for round 4. After having a relaxing breakfast. Penang teams are ready for battle...

Round 4 started as per schedule, Penang Senior team are up against PCMM whereas the Junior team met the familiar face of SMK Kulim Kedah. SMK Kulim players are seen playing in Penang a number of times and is lead by Mr. Fuad(see report on UniKL ). Penang U16G team has to fight for points to stay in contender for the "Best Junior Ladies" team.

Nevertheless, the exciting match are between top seed Selangor A team and second seed Astro. With Malaysia strongest chess player of all time, IM Mas Hafizul played Malaysia most talented chess player, FM Nicholas Chan at first board. While 2nd board was FM Anas vs FM Lim Yee Weng, 3rd board is Malaysia strongest chess lady, WIM Siti Zulaikha vs NM Marcus Chan and 4th board is Ex-World Police Chess Champion, Ismail Ahmad against Mak Weng Yee.

Playing at 3rd board for Selangor A is NM Marcus Chan(right), FIDE Rating 2227 and 4th board Mak Weng Yee(though no rating at this moment, he is just as strong!)

The result on top table is 2.5 - 1.5 in ASTRO favour. IM Mas and WIM Siti take the crucial points for ASTRO. FM Anas manage to hold FM Lim Yee Weng's attack while Mak Weng Yee win a point for Selangor A.

Mean while, Penang Senior team beat PCMM with the same score(2.5-1.5). Penang Chess Champion Tan Khai Boon defend Fairin's attack steadily but then he used up most of the time. At the end, both are in time trouble and Khai Boon's flag is the first to drop. On board 2, NM Ng Tze Han played a beautiful Sicilian Sozin Attack to down Kamaluddin Yusof while Veteran Chuah Heng Meng share points with Mohd Irman on board 3. Tan Eu Hong gets the winning point by beating a strong U12 girl, Nabila.

Round 4, NM Ng Tze Han, 2283 vs Kamaluddin Yusof, 2170, 1-0

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 d6 6. Bc4 e6 7. Be3 Be7 8. Qe2 a6 9. O-O-O Qc7 10. Bb3 b5 11. Nxc6 Qxc6 12. f3 Nd7?! Penang U16B team beat SMK Kulim 4-0 but the girls team was beaten 1.5-2.5 by their main rival(for Best Jr Ladies prize), MSSK Girls. Janet Tan on first board win the game while Chen Nee drew in K vs K+P ending. Lau Hui Ting and Koay Hui Yin lost to Qasdina Fauzi and Fairuz Hamizah respectively. Both Qasdina Fauzi and Fairuz Hamizah are U10 Girls!

Fairuz Hamizah is only 9 years old!

Round 5, Penang Senior Team played team Heroes with a hopeful result of 4-0 to catch the leader ASTRO. However, the hope is not fulfilled when Anthony Liong blundered a pawn and soon get into time trouble; and then lost the game. A painful experience for strong player like him and then he apologies to his teammate for losing focus during the game. Hey dude, everybody have a bad day, don't we? Nevertheless, Tan Khai Boon, Ng Tze Han and Tan Eu Hong wins their game.

Round 5, Tun Sri Lenang, 2069 vs Anthony Liong, 2159, 1-0

1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. c3 Nbd7 4. Bg5 g6 5. Nbd2 Bg7 6. e3 O-O 7. Bd3 (White has achieved the Torre Attack formation, an opening you will often see in 1900 - 2300 level of play.) b6 8. Qe2 Bb7 9. (Black has equalised and taken the centre; White must play 18. e4 to stop Black from playing ...e4) Kh8?! (18... e4! with the idea of ...c5 to take more share on the center) 19. Bb5?(19. e4 is better, now following is almost forced) c6 20. Ba6 b5?!(better is 20... Bxa6 21.Qxa6 e4) 21.Bxb7 Qxb7 22. Rad1(now 22. e5? because of 22... Rf4!; hoewever, White should play 22. f3 to discourage black's ...e4) a5 (Black still miss ...e4 move, but even so black position is much better) 23. Qg4 Qf7 (still 23... e4!) 24. b3 e4 (Finally!! but now 24... a4 could have been better) 25. Rc1 a4 26. c4 axb3 27. axb3 h5 28. Qg5 dxc4 29. bxc4 b4 (Anthony's idea is to created a passed pawn, however, simpler is 29... bxc4!) 30. Rb1 Bc3 31. Bg3 Qh7?(31... Qf5 to exchange Queen is simple way to maintain the winning advantage because of the passed b-pawn) 32. Bd6 Rfe8?? (losing a pawn, 32... Rf5 is a much better defense) 33. Bxb4 Bg7 34.Bd6 Ra2 35. c5 Bh6 1-0
Note : game is incomplete

The final round of the day is very exciting, it is Penang Senior team vs ASTRO; featuring PCC Tan Khai Boon vs IM Mas
Hafizul on table 1, NM Ng Tze Han as black played FM Anas on table 2, and Chuah Heng Meng and Tan Eu Hong face WIM Siti
Zulaikha and Ex World Police Chess Champion, Ismail Ahmad respectively.

The Penang Team faces the favourite...

Penang U16B will take on another Selangor team, Selangor Generasi-9 which spell tough; meanwhile the U16G team faces SMK Kulim which has been demolished by Penang U16B team and they are seeking for revenge! Can the girls hold themselves?

pic47.jpg

Kind of unfortunate Penang U16G team is faced with the "hunger for revenge" SMK Kulim...

pic48.jpg

Special attention to all, watch out this 8 years old Yeoh Li Tian, the son of NM Yeoh Chin Seng! (at 4th board vs Lim Wei Kang)

All games are hard fought with mix disappointment and surprises! PCC Tan Khai Boon came very close of beating IM Mas, but in time trouble, Khai Boon blundered and caused him the game :

Round 6, Tan Khai Boon, 2138 vs IM Mas Hafizul, 2372, 0-1

1. d4 d6 2. e4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. f4 a6 5. a4 Nc6 6. Be3 e5? (The move that cause all the trouble for Black) 7. dxe5 dxe5 8. Qxd8+ Kxd8 9. O-O-O+ Bd7 10. Nf3 Nh6 11. h3 Kc8 12. g4 f6 13. fxe5 fxe5 14. Bc4 b6 15. Nd5 Rd8 16. Ng5 Nd4 17. Nxh7 Ng8 18. g5 (Khai Boon purposely give up the a-pawn to bring his Nh7 back into the game. However, if that is the purpose, 18. Rhf1 to penetrate on f-file is much better) Bxa4 19. Nhf6 Kb7 20. Nxg8 Rxg8 21.Bxd4 exd4 22. Ne7 Rge8 23. Nxg6 Rad8 24. e5 Bxe5 25. Bf7 Bd6 26. Rxd4 Bc6 27.Rhd1 (Khai Boon has been playing well to have a good position here however, White is left with few minutes and later White blundered and lost) 0-1

Anyway, we should give credit to IM Mas for keep fighting, keep defending and struggling thru' the game. Worth it!

NM Ng Tze Han drew with FM Anas while Chuah Heng Meng lost to WIM Siti Zulaikha but Tan Eu Hong saves the day for Penang Team by beating Ex-World Police Chess Champion(see game at Eu Hong's blog ). So the score for Penang is 1.5 out of 4.

In the U16 section, Penang U16B beat Selangor Generasi-9 2.5-1.5 with Lim Wei Kang score the only win. However, Evan
made a strange decision by accepting a draw in an advantageous position :

Round 6, Muhd Syakir Shazmeer, 1651 vs Evan Timothy Capel, 1871, 1/2-1/2.

1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qa5 4. d4 c6 5. Nf3 Bf5 6. Bf4 e6 7. a3 Nf6 8. Bd3 Bxd3 9. Qxd3 Nd5 10. Bd2 Nxc3 11. Bxc3 Qc7 12. O-O Nd7 13. Bd2 Bd6 14. h3 O-O 15. c3 Bf4 16. Be3 Rad8 17. Qe4 Bd6 18. Ng5 Nf6 19. Qf3 e5 20. Ne4 Nxe4 21. Qxe4 f5 22. Qc2 exd4 23. Bxd4 c5 24. Be3 f4 25. Bd2 f3 26. Be3 fxg2 27. Kxg2 Rf6 28. Qe4 Rg6+ 29. Kf3 Qf7+ 30. Ke2 Re6 31. Qg4 Bf4 32. Rad1 Rde8 {Here, Evan accepted draw offered by his opponent. It is kind of strange as Black has overwelming advantage -- White's Be3 is under attack(If 33. Rd3 then 33...c4), White King is stuck in the center, black also can attack on Q-side by ...Rb6 (with idea of ...Qc4)} 1/2-1/2

Luckily, this game does not affect the final result else he would expect "some knock on the head" by his fellow teammate!

Another game from round 6 between Gavin Fong and Low Jun Jian :

Round 6, Gavin Fong, 1632 vs Low Jun Jian, 2057, 1/2-1/2

1. c4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. cxd5 cxd5 4. Nf3 Nf6 5. Bf4 Nc6 6. Nc3 Bf5 7. e3 e6 8. Bb5 a6 9. Bxc6+ bxc6 10. Qa4 Qb6 11. O-O Be7 12. Ne5 Rc8 13. Rfc1 O-O 14. a3 Rfd8 15. b4 Nd7 16. Nxd7 Rxd7 17. Qd1 a5 18. Na4 Qa7 19. b5 Qb7 20. b6 Rdd8 21. Qb3 f6 22. Nc5 Bxc5 23. dxc5 e5(with slight advantage to white)  1/2-1/2

Mean time, SMK Kulim has taken revenge on Penang by beating Penang U16G team 2.5-1.5. It is quite surprising that it is first timer and youngest from the U16G team, Ng Jing Jia who score a point from SMK Kulim. Ch'ng Chen Nee, as White, has winning advantage after a bad play by Black. Instead of capitalised it, white went wrong and suddenly it is black who is playing for a win. Luckily for Chen Nee, Zhao Liang also went wrong and though black is still slightly better, the endgame is not enough to win.

Round 6, Ch'ng Chen Nee, 1278 vs Wee Zhao Liang, 1150, 1/2-1/2

1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Bf4 e6 4. e3 c5 5. c3 Nc6 6. Bd3 c4?(It is better to maintain the tension on the center) 7. Bc2 Bd6 8. Ne5 Bxe5 9. Bxe5 Nxe5 10. dxe5 Nd7 11. f4 Qh4+ 12. g3 Qh3 13. Qe2 O-O 14. Nd2 b5 15. Nf3 Nc5? (15... f6 to prevent White's next move is correct) 16. Ng5 Qh6 17. b4?(17. Bxh7+! win a pawn) Ne4? (this lose a pawn without compensation. Better defense is 17... Nd3 18. Bxd3 cxd3 19. Qxd3 Bd7 etc.)  18. Nxe4 dxe4 19. Bxe4 Rb8 20. Rd1(20. a4! to blast off black Q-side) Bb7 21. Bxb7 Rxb7 22. Qd2?(again 22. a4 is better) f6?! 23. exf6 Qxf6 24. O-O Rbb8 25. Qc2(25. e5 is better) Rbd8 26. Qc1(white is playing without a plan, e5 or even a5 could have been better) Rd3? (I think this is physcological play. Since White is playing without a plan/waiting, it's worth a try to scare his opponent than he is on the attack. But I believe the d3 pawn is more a weakness rather than a strong one) 27. Rxd3 cxd3 28. Rd1(28. c4! is the idea) Rd8 29. e4??(throw away the advantage, 29. c4) e5!(Black create holes) 30. f5 Qc6 31. Rd2?? (give away a pawn and end up in a very bad position. White should keep the pawn by 31. Qg5 then Qg4) Qxe4!(of course) 32. Qf1 Qe3+ (better would be 32... Qc4 with the idea of pushing the e-pawn) 33. Qf2 Qxf2+?(exchanging Queen is a bad idea -- "Every Rook endgame is a draw". Although not true, it does indicate Rook endgame is hard to play. Better is 33...Qh6 with idea of pushing ...e4) 34. Kxf2 Kf7 35. Ke3 Kf6 36. Ke4 h6 37. g4 h5(a good trick, do you know how black take advantage if White play 38. gxh5?

post1.jpg
Analysis position. Black to move and win.

38... Kg5? is definitely bad because of 39. Kxe5. So, I wonder if Black sees it when he played 37...h5

38. h3 hxg4 39. hxg4 (this position is still slightly better for black, however, Chen Nee defended it and draw) 1/2-1/2
Note : the game is incomplete

pic49.jpg

first timer 11 year old Ng Jing Jia is a bit impatient at the begining of the tournament, but she had learned a lot from  this outing and manage to take down Kulim's boy at round 6.

pic50.jpg

Lim Wei Kang deliver the winning point for U16B team at round 6

So, at the end of 2 days battle, Penang State teams contesting well :

Penang Senior Team = 15.5/24
Penang U16B Team = 17/24
Penang U16G Team = 11/24

Pairing for Round 7 is out that afternoon and the Senior team are up against top seed Selangor A team and I think it's not bad at all because meeting them at final round is even worst! Meanwhile, Penang U16G will play Karisma Knights from Negeri Sembilan. And it is so surprise that MSSK girls are doing so well that they will play Penang U16B at round 7(table 2!). These girls really mean business...

Satisfied with the pairing, everyone then walk back to Hotel and have a good rest!
