Merdeka Team Chess Championship is a very well known chess event in Malaysia and has been successfully stay for 27 years! This year, the 3-days event is organised in Wilayah Compleks, and it’s a 8 rounds swiss pairing with 90 minutes time control each. Astro Merdeka Team Chess Championship has been marked as one of the most important ways for chess players to celebrate Merdeka every year. (Merdeka day = Malaysia Independence day)
30 August, Day 1 3 Penang State teams, i.e. Senior, U16B and U16G, together with few school teams travel as early as 10.30am from Penang Island to Kuala Lumpur to participate in this event. Penang Senior Team are presented by : Tan Khai Boon (2138) Ng Tze Han (2283) Anthony Liong Ing Kiat (2159) Chuah Heng Meng (1740) Tan Eu Hong (2043) Penang U16B Team are presented by : Evan Timothy Capel (1871) Gavin Fong Wei Chern (1632) Elgin Lee Kah Meng (1469) Thong Yung Chen (1977) Lim Wei Kang (1596) And Penang U16G Team are presented by : Janet Tan Jia Yin (1232) Ng Jing Jia (1098) Ch'ng Chen Nee (1278) Lau Hui Ting (1144) Koay Hui Yin (1150) The trip to KL is a long one but it’s no boring at all; Some playing blindfold chess, some playing cards game and other discussing about line up, etc. Scene from the bus :

Playing "UNO" cards game while the experience Chuah take a nap Reached Tune Hotel, the place we stayed, at around 4pm and Penang contingents quickly check into the rooms, take a rest and then went off for dinner. Since it is Merdeka eve, a group of us went to Merdeka Square, where the Merdeka gathering is held.

It is over crowded here... can you imagine, we can't reach the big screen there! 
At 12, the crowd broke into Merdeka celebrations! And the count down is on... 3... 2... 1... MERDEKA! MERDEKA!! MERDEKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The crowd went into celebrations, but it’s time for us to go back to hotel. We can’t affort to lose too much sleep for tomorrow’s games... |
