Today(22 July) is the final day of Penang Closed Chess Tournament and as expected, a fierce battle is taking place at RABB…

And Arbiter’s desk : computer and projector

Round 5 started at 9am sharp and there are hard fought games and surprises : In first table, Anthony Liong, the second seed, beat Peter Lim, the only full-point player after 4 round (and third seed) with black pieces to take the sole lead while Eu Hong beat Yik Ping in second board. Two surprises came from two 11 year old boys : Kee Zijia beat Lim Wei Kang and Elgin Lee manage to hold Evan to a draw.

pgc205.jpg

Kee Zijia(1258) thinking hard to beat Lim Wei Kang(1596) at table 4

pgc206.jpg

“What happen to my beautiful defense?” (Wei Kang at round 5)

pgc207.jpg

“hmm… how do I break his Nimzo Indian defense?” (Elgin Lee, 1382 vs Evan, 1430)

pgc208.jpg

Peter Lim 4/4 is stop by Anthony Liong at round 5, with 0-1 to the later.

6th round saw 11 year old KeeZijia at table 1 once again playing black against Anthony Liong; unfortunately, Kee is unable to defend against White’s attack. Peter Lim suffers another loss to Tan Eu Hong at table 2 while top seed, Tan Khai Boon came back strongly with 5 straight wins(after his first round lost to Kee Zijia). So, before the final round, there are, practically, 4 fighting for Penang Chess Champion, i.e. Anthony Liong(5.5), Tan Khai Boon(5) and Tan Eu Hong(5). Final round pairing saw Tan Khai Boon vs Anthony Liong, while Eu Hong is up against fifth seed Gavin Fong(4).

pgc209.jpg

Top seed Tan Khai Boon, has never out of title contender even his first round lost

pgc210.jpg

Second seed Anthony Liong is the sole leader with 5.5/6

Eu Hong and Gavin end up with a draw and so the very fierce battle occurred at table 1 who fight till the very last minute…

pgc211.jpg

Both players in time scramble while Chief Arbiter, Mr. Tan Hock Lye(in green) looks on.
