After last week PAG, PCA return to SLC with a PCA-SLC open tournament. The objectives are to encourage chess at the mainland and create opportunities for butterworth, Sungai Petani, Kulim and other town nearby to join the tournament.

The registration for the tournament is encouraging with almost 80 players. However, the turnout was less than 50% of what appear on registration list.... that was bad for the pairing when most of the players will expect a walkover at first round!

So, with quick action, pairing handler Tan Eu Hong remove the absent player from the pairing and as the result, the tournament started late at 10.30am. However, given the situation, I think the late start is justifable...

2008 Sarawak Closed Chess Championship had been successfully held at Boreno Chess Academy, Kuching from 27-30 June 2008. It attracted 37 players including those coming from Miri, Sibu, Lundu and Selangor. The prize winners of this 9-round event are as follows:
Champion: Abg.Mohd.Reduan 7 pts.
2nd: Leong Zhi Wen 6.5 pts.
3rd: Japeri Reduan 6.5 pts.
4th: Lim Kian Hwa 6.5 pts.
5th: Morsin Ahmad 6.0 pts.
6th: Faeznor Razali 5.5 pts.
7th: Hj.Mohd.Nasir 5.5 pts
8th: Charlene Chai 5.5 pts.

Usually 1st leg of Penang Age Group is held at Penang; but this year, PCA started it at Bukit Mertajam first. The venue is SLC Auto Academy at Sungai Rambai, Bukit Mertajam. SLC Auto Academy provide services and repairs on vehicles; and more importantly, SLC Auto Academy produces professional car foremen, technicians every year!

Tournament Regulations:1.       This 11 Round, individual tournament is open to all players.2.       FIDE (World Chess Federation) rules and regulations will apply. The tournament will be FIDE rated.3.       The Swiss Manager Program will be used for pairings.4.       The games will be played according to the schedule below. Incentive Prizes
To encourage decisive results there is a prize fund (maximum US$ 2,000) to be distributed at the end of the tournament among players of any rank defeating Grandmasters. The maximum prize per win is US$ 100 and if the number of wins exceeds 20, then those defeating GMs will receive a pro-rated share of the prize fund. Another US$ 200 will be given as the Best Game Prize.
Medals & certificates will be given to prize winners. The champion’s name will be engraved on the Dato’ Arthur Tan Challenge Trophy.
Participants are entitled to only one prize (the larger). Where prizes are the same value, the Open Section Prizes will take precedence over the Malaysian/Special Prizes.
 Venue: Ballroom, 5th Floor, CitiTel Mid Valley Hotel, Mid Valley Megamall, Lingkaran Syed Putra, 59200 KL.Accommodations: All players are required to budget for their own board and lodging as well as transportation needs. The official hotel is CitiTel Mid Valley Hotel. First 20 GMs to register will be provided accommodations on a twin-sharing basis. Conditions for Titled Players: No tournament entry fee for Gms, Ims, WGms, WIms and players rated above 2500 on the July 2008 FIDE Rating List.
